Child Development Center (hereafter stated as “CDC”) also known as Shishu Bikash Kendra (SBK) –in Bangla was formed within the Department of Pediatric Neurosciences at Dhaka Shishu Hospital is the first acute care hospital in Bangladesh. CDC was established in 1992 to provide services for developmental disabilities and neurological impairments both in the out-patients department (OPD) and in-patients department (IPD). Bangladesh has made significant progress in reducing child mortality rates. However, at the same time numbers of children with Neuro-developmental Disorders (NDDs) increased.

Since 2008 Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of Bangladesh (GOB) has established multidisciplinary Child Development Centers/ Shishu Bikash Kendra across the country in government hospitals. Till now total 15 Sbks has been established in 15 govt. medical collage hospitals and 8 Child Development Center in specialized, non-profit and private medical collage hospitals. The core professional team consists of pediatricians trained in Child Neurology & Development, Child Psychologists, Developmental Therapists, office manager and cleaner.

Public Awareness activities of CDC to families and empower parents/caregiver by providing audio visual awareness programs which will strengthen their knowledge to identify atrisk children specially Visual and Hearing impairment with multiple disabilities to help towards prevention of major childhood disabilities to optimize their child’s development.
